The Columbus Crew have recalled winger Marino Hinestroza for his loan, per Tom Bogert of GiveMeSport.
The 22 year-old was on loan at Atletico Nacional in Columbia’s first division since July. During his time at Atletico Nacional, Hinestroza recorded four goals and two assists in 28 matches.
Before his loan, the Columbian arrived in Columbus before the 2024 season. Hinestroza arrived for a $3.2 million transfer fee from C.F. Pachuca in Liga MX. According to the MLSPA salary guide, Hinestroza would sign a contract in which he would have a guaranteed compensation of $574,750 in the 2024 season. However, not all of this salary would count towards the salary cap as the Crew placed the U-22 initiative tag on him.
During his time in Columbus, Hinestorza would score two goals in 22 matches across all competitions. His first goal would prove to be a big one, as it was the match tying goal in a gam in Nashville on March 30. His second goal would also come on the road, this time in Montreal on May 15.
To many crew fans, Hinestroza was finally starting to look confortable in Nancy’s system, and was giving exciting minutes in the few games beforre his loan. Hwever, Hinestroza’s last game in the black and gold left a sour taste in many’s mouth. Hinestroza was given a red card after throwing a punch at a LAFC player in the team’s 5-1 win in July.
Bogert is also reporting that Atletico Nacional still want Hinestroza on their team, but want another loan. Other clubs also are interested, but Columbus are not willing to loan him again. Columbus is “excited to see him back for preseason.”
SInce leaving for loan, the crew have signed several players in similar positions as Hinesroza, like AZ Jackson and Dylan Chambost. However with a bunch of games acorss all competitions, and Hinestroza’s improved level of play on loan, expect to see him get a good amount of minutes in 2025.
